A LETTER FROM THE PRODUCER OF BABY COLLEGEWhat if every child in America entered Kindergarten able to speak English and read at a second grade level?
In 1998, in response to some exciting new reports on early brain development in infants, my company, 100% Educational Videos, produced a video tape aimed at teaching very young children, babies even, to begin talking at an early age. Research had demonstrated the need for making brain connections at a very early age, with an emphasis on imprinting on the baby's mind, the basic sounds of the English language.
The response from those who used the tape was overwhelmingly positive. We have an Early Education professional who recommends the tape during their lectures at Early Childhood conferences. We have pediatricians who are amazed at the child's verbal progress, and we have parents who report their child's progress as impressing whole neighborhoods.
William Fowler, in his book "Talking from Infancy," described the benefits possible from this early, enriched learning. It includes speaking words 3-4 months early, and using Connected Speech at about 2 years sooner than expected. Children who use the subsequent tapes (in production) and thereby develop phonemic awareness should be ready to begin
reading at a very early age. And, since our tape was designed to be viewed by the parent and then modeled for the infant and/or viewed by the infant while the parent is busy elsewhere, the parent can, if she chooses, be very closely involved with the child and even initiate the learning.
We are excited about the tape we have made and the others that need to be made.
What we need is help. We believe that because of it's importance and impact, this particular set of videos needs to be distributed without regard to profit. We want the tapes to reach those children most in need but also in a way where the most children derive the
benefit. We would like all new mothers to have the tapes -- not just the few that are exposed
and buy through our limited channels. For instance through foundation or corporate support, or through a government program, the entire tape set could be given free at birthing hospitals or to new mothers through the mail.
I am convinced this video could provide a major contribution to the cause of Early Education and would be especially beneficial in preparing bilingual and disadvantaged children for school. My wife, a first grade teacher with a specialization in phonics, is similarly convinced. We need others, particularly those with connections in government or business to help us find influential people to get a program going.
